After the great success Fiat had enjoyed with its 600, the 850 was presented in 1964 as an evolution of the same concept: A rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive compact car, slightly larger than the 600 in external dimensions as well as engine capacity. On the basis of the Fiat 850 the Italian tuning company Abarth, at that time still an indepentent enterprise, built various sporty yet street legal sedan models from 1964 to 1970. These vehicles carried the designation “OT”, which stood for “Omologata Turismo”, meaning “homologated touring car”. One of them, internally named project 102, was the Fiat Abarth OT 1000 Berlina. This small sports car appeared in 1964 and was produced for only two years. The chassis and body were taken over from the predecessor OT 850, but the 1.0-liter four-cylinder engine installed now offered a power upgrade to 40 kW (54 hp) at 5,200 rpm. In later variants, Abarth crammed 1.3 and even 2.0 litre engines into the small Fiat 850 body, which are reported to reach a top speed of up to 250 km/h! Always rare, only very few of these cars remain in existence, which are counted as sought-after collector items among Abarth enthusiasts.
