It can be seen in a famous car chase scene in “Bullitt” and in many parts of “The Fast and the Furious” – the Dodge Charger. The fashionable sports coupe belonged to the class of muscle cars and was intended to appeal to young people in particular. In 1966 the first generation of the car appeared on the platform of the Dodge Coronet. The Charger had a wide radiator grille and concealed headlights that turned forward when switched on. The 318 cui V8 engine was used as standard. The wide radiator grille was also retained as a trademark in the sports car’s second generation, but the interior was revised and a vinyl roof was offered as an optional extra. In addition, a “R/T” (“Road & Track”) version with Hemi-V8 engines became available, which aimed for impressive acceleration. In contrast to the first generation, the cars were also available in striking colours such as pink or bright yellow. As a result of the new emissions law, the third generation vehicles were fitted with lower-performance engines, but were more comfortable. From 1975 the Charger S/E was produced, which belonged to the Personal Luxury Car class. In 1978 the history of this sports car with bite came to an end.
