Its panoramic rear window earned it the nickname “goldfish bowl”: The Jensen Interceptor. The four-seater sports car with the martial name – an interceptor is a military fighter plane – was introduced in 1966. It was built on the tubular frame chassis of its predecessor, the C-V8, but featured a steel body designed by Vignale. Power came from Chrysler big block V8 engines, mostly combined with automatic transmission, although manual gearshift was optional at a customer’s request. Three versions of this luxury GT were produced: Most frequently is the saloon, which was built over three generations. The first facelift in 1969 brought higher bumpers, a different radiator grille and dashboard, and introduced power steering. The third generation, available as of 1971, introduced a 7.2 litre engine to make up for performance losses due to more stringent US emissions laws. A convertible (1974) with reinforced chassis became the most expensive and sought-after variant. The rarest, however, was the coupe (1975) with notchback and hardtop roof. In 1976 the production ended after a total of 6,640 units. The all-wheel drive pioneer Jensen FF and the Jensen SP, although marketed as individual models, are clearly related to the interceptor.
