If you were looking for a comfortable convertible for your whole family, you couldn’t get past the W111 Mercedes convertible in the 1960s. The 220 SE Cabriolet was presented at the IAA in 1961. The 220 SE does not want to be a sports car, although the 120 PS with the 1420 kg curb weight certainly do not make the Mercedes a traffic obstacle. You are perfectly equipped for country road speeds and the noble convertible is in good hands there. There you also learn to appreciate the elasticity of the engine and the high level of driving comfort. There is hardly a more suitable vehicle to drive to the restaurant with the family. This convertible was unrivaled in its time. The well-known car magazines literally came up with superlatives. For many, the W111 was the “car of the future”. It was a carefully constructed car, as the customer could expect for the money. Lots of wood and leather created an exclusive ambience inside, which was furnished for five people. “Nothing saved inside and outside” was Seiffert’s summary in his test report. In contrast to the sedan, the coupé did not have a steering wheel, but a sportier middle gear. Thanks to the low beltline, passengers are rewarded with an almost unrestricted all-round view.
