The Fiat 500 Topolino, built from 1936 to 1955, could hardly be surpassed in terms of simplicity but also in terms of economy. But above all it was the most successful small car of its time.
It had to be small, light and cheap – the new Fiat, which was to complement the model range downwards. Nobody suspected at the time that it would turn out to be the most successful car from the Turin-based manufacturer Fiat. Because of its appearance, the Fiat 500 was named “Topolino” ,meaning little mouse in English.
With four cylinders and 569 cm3, the engine was equipped for a good output, but Fiat (for the time being) left it at 13 hp.
The power was delivered to the rigidly suspended rear axle via a four-speed gearbox via a cardan shaft, the front wheels were individually suspended. All wheels were braked hydraulically with drum brakes.
