Perfect Audi convertible in top condition
For over 50 years, there had not been any new Audi Convertible: When production of the 920 was halted in 1940 due to WWII, this marked the end of a tradition. Only in 1991 would there be a soft-top vehicle carrying the Audi brand name. It was based on the Audi 80 B4, which in itself was an evolution of the successful B3 series. The convertible benefitted from this tried and tested basis, as well as from the fact that Audi had introduced full galvanization for the B3.
At first, the convertible was only available with the well-known 2.3 litre 5-cylinder petrol engine. A 2.8 litre V6 followed in 1992, and 4-cylinder petrol and – for the first time ever in a convertible – turbo Diesel engines completed the lineup. All Audi convertibles had front wheel drive – meaning no quattro was on offer – and featured either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. An electro-hydraulic opening mechnism for the soft-top was available as of 1993.
While the Audi 80 sedan was replaced by the 1st generation A4 in 1996, the convertible was continued until the year 2000. For the last two years of its production run, it was assembled by Karmann at Rheine. A total of 71,510 convertibles was built, which with their elegant design and high manufacturing quality are already considered classics today.
