The Lincoln Motor Car Company was founded by Henry M. Leland and his son Wilfried in the USA in 1917. At first, only aircraft engines were built. After the 1st World War they prepared the production of luxury automobiles. The first Lincoln came on the market in 1920. For financial reasons, Leland sold the Lincoln plants to the Ford Motor Company. This was Ford’s entry into the luxury car segment. These premium automobiles brought Ford more prestige than profit in some cases. The 1960 Lincoln Mark V Convertible, with its overall length of nearly 5.8 meters, was probably the largest American passenger car ever built in production. Despite this impressive size, the body was of self-supporting design and from this year onwards a rigid axle with leaf springs was fitted instead of a semi-trailing arm rear axle. At the same time, the power of the V8 engine was reduced to 315 hp in favor of lower fuel consumption. The luxurious extensive equipment includes the electric windows to be operated at the push of a button, the electrically adjustable seats and the convertible top. Plus power-assisted steering and a “Twin Range Turbo-Drive” automatic transmission. These luxurious, huge, two-door convertibles or coupes earned Lincoln premium placement in the “Personal Luxury Cars” category.
