Alpina, the tuner, finisher and BMW colleague based in Buchloe in the Allgäu region is known as a manufacturer of fast and inconspicuous BMW’s. Alpina takes over, after the main assembly on the regular BMW production lines, a normal BMW model. The D3 Biturbo is based on the BMW E90. It was available as a sedan, touring (station wagon) and coupe. Its biturbo-charged 4-cylinder diesel engine with a common-rail direct injection system is essentially the unit of the 123d. According to Alpina’s processing, it produces 157 kW (214 hp), with a low consumption of only 5.4 liters per 100 kilometers. Torque is converted particularly intensively. Already at 1500 revolutions, a full 400 Newton meters are available, 500 revolutions later it is even 450 – a completely new torque high feeling. The D3 can sprint to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. A chromed twin tailpipe replaces the BMW exhaust system. Equipped with its own body kit to distinguish it from the numerous M3 models on our roads, as well as 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, sport seats and a sport steering wheel, it was a fairly affordable option. On the automatic models, the wonderfully tactile “Alpina” “nipples” for the manual shift mode located on the back of the sport steering wheel are a delight.
