The “BMW 3 Series” – long a household name and something of the epitome of the luxury mid-size sedan. It all started over 40 years ago: in 1975 BMW presented the successor to the 02 series, internally referred to as the E21, with originally 3 four-cylinder models named 316, 318 and 320, designated according to their displacement of 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 liters. While the first two had single round headlights, the more expensive model was recognizable by its twin round headlights. In 1977, a new 6-cylinder engine, the M20, was introduced: A carbureted version for the 320/6 and a fuel-injected version for the top-of-the-line 323i, which produced 105 kW (141 hp) and made it to a top speed of 200 km/h. This engine cemented the BMW brand’s outstanding reputation for sporty sedans.
All BMW E21s were two-door sedans; there were no four-doors or station wagons as in later 3 Series models. BMW also did not offer a convertible from the factory, but the coachbuilder Baur produced an open version with a targa roof and rear soft top starting in 1978, which was officially offered through authorized BMW dealers.
Over 1.3 million units of the E21 were built until 1982, when the 2nd generation “3”, the E30, was ready to replace it.
