The Lincoln Motor Car Company was founded by Henry M. Leland and his son Wilfried in the USA in 1917. At first only aircraft engines were built. After World War I preparations were made for the production of luxury automobiles. The first Lincoln came out in 1920. For financial reasons, Leland sold the Lincoln works to the Ford Motor Company. For Ford, this was the entry into the luxury car segment. These premium automobiles have in some cases brought more prestige than profit to Ford. The Continental Mark II made its debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 6, 1955. The Mark II, which was only produced for two years, 1956 and 1957, was never referred to as a Lincoln, nor was it marketed under that name. If you want to piss off a Continental Mark II owner, call the car a Lincoln…it’s not a Lincoln. It’s a Continental. The Continental Mark II was the elite automobile of the 1950s for the rich and famous: Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Louie Prima, Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Rockefeller, the Shah of Iran and many other celebrities proudly owned and drove them. About 2600 units were produced in the first model year of the Mark II, with only 444 in the second year. On May 8, 1957, the Continental Mark II was officially discontinued.
