The Renault Dauphine (French for heir to the throne) owes its name to its mission: to succeed the sales success of the 1950s: the Renault 4CV. It shares a rear engine and a notchback body with its big brother. As a result, the Dauphine took the crown by becoming the best-selling saloon in France. The Dauphine Gordini, on the other hand, was the result of a collaboration between Amédée Gordini and Régie Renault.
The Renault Dauphine Gordini disappeared from the catalog in 1962 to make way for another extremely sporty version of the Dauphine, the “1093”. In the same year, Renault offered the limited Dauphine 1093 series for particularly sporty drivers: It sent 55 hp to the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox. A very short-lived adventure, however, as the Renault Dauphine Gordini celebrated its comeback from 1963. While the marketing of the Renault Dauphine “Standard” came to an end in 1962 in favor of the Renault 8, the Renault Dauphine Gordini was produced until December 1967.
