Salmson is probably best remembered for its 35 years as an automobile manufacturer, producing some of the most distinctive touring and sports cars of the interwar period. At the Paris Salon of 1921, a whole series of Salmsons were on display: a two-seater “Tourisme”, a Voiturette, a three-seater “Torpedo”, a Landaulet, a limousine, a van and a pickup were on offer.
Emile Salmson realized that one of the main problems facing aircraft manufacturers was the lack of suitable engines. When the opportunity arose to acquire a license to manufacture the Canton Urine radial engine, Salmson quickly founded a company called Societe des Moteurs Salmson. The new company’s factory was located at 3 Avenue des Moulineaux in Billancourt, not far from Issy airfield, where seven- and nine-cylinder radial engines had been built during the war. The air-cooled Salmson AD9, introduced in the mid-1920s, was popular with pioneer pilots on both sides of the Atlantic.
