“If you have enough power in a small car, it is more pleasant to drive […] and more fun” – this realization, as Ferry Porsche once said in an interview, was the basic principle on which he created the 356. The first prototypes were built as early as 1948 in Gmünd, Austria. From 1950, the 356 was built at the new Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen. What began as a lighter, more elegant and more powerful version of the Beetle, with which it shared not only the basic idea and layout, but initially also various components, became the sports car icon of the 1950s over the years. Based on the America Roadster, a US importer demanded a sporty model. In addition, there were specifications from Porsche such as: Lightweight by omission; Open; Suitable for sports and club sport. These requirements were met by using plug-in windows instead of crank windows, while the glove box, sun visors and storage options in the doors were declared superfluous. This made the “Speedster” 45 kg lighter and improved its driving performance. As a result, this Porsche Roadster achieved its unbroken popularity to this day. The 356, the Speedster and the sports and racing variants developed from them established the Porsche brand’s worldwide sporting fame.
