Carroll Shelby was a successful racing driver in the 1950s. In 1959, he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in an Aston Martin. After retiring from racing for health reasons, he began importing the AC Cobra to the USA and equipping it with Ford V8 engines. When Ford manager Lee Iacocca asked him to build a performance-enhanced version of the Ford Mustang, the Shelby Mustang was born. In the first years of production, 1965 and 1966, it was essentially a road-legal race car: normal Mustangs were given improved suspension and brakes, more power and body modifications such as a fiberglass hood with air intakes. In 1965, the General Manager of Hertz, P. Cramer, approached Shelby to win a Mustang for his new rental car program “Rent a Race”. The aim was to offer racing enthusiasts a rental car experience. To this end, the Ford Shelby Mustang GT350-H was developed, based on the 1966 GT350. For this Hertz edition, a Cobra 289 cui high-performance V8 engine with 306 hp was used. Unique features include the wheel hub caps with the Hertz Sports Car Club logo, the rev counter on the dashboard and the Plexiglas side rear window. A total of just 1,001 examples were built in 1966. Of these 799 in Raven Black with “Le Mans” racing stripes in Gold Bronze from the hood to the rear and on the sides, the Shelby Mustangs were built until 1969, some vehicles were renumbered as 1970 models.
