Daimler designed the G-Class for the fearless ride over hill and dale, snow and ice, scree and steep slopes – and knows something else. Off-road capability has always been a top priority for the vehicle, which was launched in 1979. Otherwise it could not have asserted itself against the relentless competition over a period of forty years.
The G-model has been built in the Puch plant in Graz-Thondorf from the start. The new G-Class of the 463 series has also been manufactured in Styria since May 2018. Since 1979, Mercedes-Benz has been supplying engines, axles, steering and large body pressed parts to Graz from various locations in Germany. Series production starts in February 1979 shortly after the world premiere. The Geländefahrzeug Gesellschaft (GfG) founded by both companies in 1977 is responsible for this.
The designers from Daimler skilfully combine the large, smooth surfaces of the body with the technically specified properties such as large slope angles at the front and rear and a comparatively large vehicle height with a rather narrow overall width.
