The Porsche 944 was presented at the 1981 IAA. It was technically and visually based on the 924, which had appeared five years earlier. However, the Audi engine of the 924, which had been criticized by Porsche purists, was replaced by a genuine Porsche engine: a 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder, essentially a halved 5.0-litre V8 from the 928.
In 1986, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo Cup, a new racing series for a one-make cup. Experienced racing drivers as well as highly motivated young drivers competed on the platform of the ADAC Super Cup. The uniform racing cars, Porsche 944 Turbo Cup, were standard 944s equipped with the original exhaust system with regulated 3-way catalytic converter. Only minor modifications to the chassis were permitted. Unlike the production cars, the Cup racers rolled on 8″ wide alloy rims at the front and 9″ wheels at the rear. The Motronic electronic control system and other sensors were sealed to ensure equal opportunities for the participants. In 1987, the 944 Turbo Cup received a power increase to 250 hp.
