When the Ford Escort was launched in Germany in August 1968, the debutant was affectionately christened the “dog bone” by motorists due to its front end – the start of a remarkable automotive success story that ended in 1998 after a total of 30 years and seven Escort generations. The Ford Escort also celebrated one triumph after another in motorsport – no car in Ford’s history to date has been more successful on race and rally tracks.
Its success was no accident: the functional beauty of the successful bodywork made the Escort a bestseller in England and on the export markets.
