At the 1997 motor show in Tokyo, BMW presented a concept car under the name Z 07. The body shape showed many design elements of the legendary BMW 507. In close consultation with the designers Fisker and Ninic, the concept car already bore a high degree of resemblance to the production model. The production version of the BMW Z8 was presented at the International Motor Show ( IAA ) in Frankfurt in 1999. The 4.40 m long outer body shell was bolted to a self-supporting aluminum frame. This design reduced the weight and created a torsionally rigid roadster body. The engine of the M5 with 400 hp was taken from the large BMW model pool. Other tried and tested parts, such as the brake equipment, could be used from the 750i model. Despite the use of lightweight metals, the unladen weight did not fall below 1.5 tons. The main reason for this was that the BMW Z8 was only delivered with extensive basic equipment = full equipment. Individual equipment was possible when selecting the exterior color, the color of the soft top and the special rims. The BMW Z8 reached a total number of 5,703 units.
The leading role in the movie “The world is not enough” with James Bond and in “The Tuxedo” with Jackie Chan made it world-famous.
