Based on the Alfetta sedan which had made its debut two years previously, Alfa Romeo presented the Alfetta GT in 1974. The coupé featured a shortened wheelbase, but retained the much-praised transaxle layout, which meant that the engine was under the low bonnet, while clutch, gearbox and differential shared a housing in the rear, for an optimized weight balance. This, together with the De Dion rear axle, resulted in excellent traction and handling. The 2-door fastback coupé with the prominent wedge shape so typical for cars of this era was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. Apart from the same-size double headlights, its design was completely independent from the Alfetta sedan. Initially, only the 1.8 litre engine was available. This was replaced in 1976 by a 1.6 litre engine, and simultaneously the Alfetta GTV 2.0 catered for customers asking for more power. In 1980, the car received a facelift, the newer models easily recognizable by their plastic bumpers, and a V6 engine was released, highly lauded by the motoring press for its sound as well as its performance. All in all, around 137,500 units were built, of which only a small percentage remains today.
