No other American sports car, in fact no other American car of any kind, is better known than the Chevrolet Corvette. Here, a second generation model is going to auction. It is a 1967 convertible, the last year of the C2 production span, which already incorporates the improvements introduced earlier, such as the upgraded suspension – a 1964 feature – or the all-wheel disc brakes of 1965. Would you have known, the 1967 models can be identified by the five small front fender vents: Earlier C2 Sting Rays had only three, larger ones. And on the inside, the handbrake between the seats, rather than under the dash, is another 1967-only feature.
This Corvette has the 5.4 litre small block V8 installed, delivering up to 223 kW (300 hp) of power. It is connected to a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was, according to its previous owner, partially restored by a Corvette specialist in the US, giving it back its original appearance regarding engine, brakes, exhaust and paint in “Lynndale Blue”, which looks simply gorgeous with the light-beige soft top in good shape. It comes with the original radio. The large, original analog clock in the centre console is not working. The Corvette is reportedly in good to very good condition both technically, as well as optically. The previous owner purchased it in 2012 and is selling due to time restraints.
The first generation Corvette, as presented in 1953, was Chevrolet’s reply to Porsche and Jaguar: A compact roadster which was lightweight – owing to its fibreglass body on a steel frame – and, with the introduction of a V8 in 1956, also sporty. In 1963, the second generation, marketed as Corvette Sting Ray, was released. It had a significantly improved chassis with independent rear wheel suspension and disc brakes. But above all, it featured a strikingly new and exciting design. Retractable headlamps were introduced – and became a Corvette hallmark until the 6th generation made its debut in 2005. With closed “eyes”, the Corvette had a sharp-edged front to contrast its elegant, flowing lines: stingray-like, indeed. For the first time, the Corvette was not only available as a convertible, but also as a coupé. This was even more radically styled, with doors continuing into the roof and a tapering rear deck which featured – albeit only for one model year – a divided rear window.
In terms of motorisation, there were basically two groups of engines based on either the “small block” (5.4 litres) or “big block” (up to 7 litres), with various transmissions and axle ratios. The C2 Sting Ray was built until 1967. Late models benefit from five years of refinement and are arguably the best of the line.
