Visitors to the 1999 IAA motor show in Frankfurt were already able to see the first show car. The compact and purist roadster segment of the 1950s and 1960s, combined with current safety and comfort requirements, was the conceptual basis for expanding the product range. After a further show model at the Paris Motor Show in May 2000, the production vehicle was presented to the general public in Berlin in August 2002. The Smart Roadster and Smart Roadster Coupé (model series 452) with a 698 cm³ 3-cylinder turbo engine were launched in April 2003. The transverse and highly inclined rear engine drives the rear wheels via the automated sequential six-speed manual transmission. With an engine output of 60 KW, torque of around 110 Nm and a curb weight of just 790 – 865 kg, depending on equipment, the Smart Roadster conveys impressive driving dynamics. The robust, so-called Tridion safety cell, from the manufacturer Daimler the function of the occupant protection is described “like a hard nutshell”, proved itself in extensive crash tests and was adopted from the Smart two 450 series. The last Smart Roadster rolled off the production line in November 2005. The vehicles that remain today are already sought-after youngtimers.
