This pretty VW Beetle is what is known in California as a “Black Plate Car” – that’s what vehicles are referred to which were already on the road in 1963 (when all vehicles were issued the new plates) or registered no later than 1969 and then spent all their life in the virtually rainless “Sunshine State”. This one was delivered new to the US in 1958, and is said to have been with its first owner in Palm Springs right until 2014! The underbody has never been welded, and even the light blue paintjob is, apart from clearly visible patch-ups, mostly original. Chrome is good, too.
The odometer reads an unwarranted mileage of 63,500 mls. According to the consignor, the car was subjected to a minor overhaul around 5,000 miles ago. The black leatherette interior is in a well-kept condition, as are the matching colour door panels and the grey carpets.
A contemporaneous radio is also on board. The exhaust is, as can be seen on the photos, of course not original. One of the highlights of this early beetle are its semaphore indicators (in working order).
The VW has valid technical approval until 02/2018 and historic plates.
Our recommendation: Buy it. Drive it. Catch people’s eyes!
As early as 1945, mass production of the VW Beetle was commenced – the last one rolled off the line in 2003. The VW Beetle was produced over 20,000,000 times and had become a classic during its production period, enjoying a wide fan base right until today.
In early 2014, more than 10 percent of all registered classic cars in Germany were “creepy crawlies”, making it beyond any doubt the most popular classic car of all times.
Over the decades, the beetle has undergone numerous changes, the most obvious concerned the shape of the rear window. The two-piece oval rear window (“split”) was replaced in 1953 by a larger one-piece oval window. As of August 1957, this was replaced by a much wider rear window. Quite a few owners of older models had these “modern” windows installed subsequently, making the original singular-oval window variants more desirable and valuable today.
